Auldnoir Video Game Book Club - Vol. 1: Pyre

Rejoice, for the first game of Auldnoir’s Video Game Book Club is…

Pyre

What is it?

Pyre is a party-based RPG in which you lead a band of exiles to freedom through ancient competitions spread across a vast, mystical purgatory. Who shall return to glory, and who shall remain in exile to the end of their days?

preview-full-Match1

The concept of Pyre came out from prototyping several game ideas by Supergiant Games, according to creative director Greg Kasavin eventually coming to the theme of “what happens when you face defeat, and have to come back from it the next day, look your friends in the face, look yourself in the mirror, and deal with the consequences of the decisions you made?”

Mint’s Thoughts

THIS IS THE BEST SUPERGIANT GAME DON’T @ ME

How to VGBC

Play the Game

this should be easy, right? …right?

You don’t have to finish the game.

But if you don’t, you should explain why.

Talk about the game in this thread.

that should be easy right? …right?

have fun

Cool. I’ll start a new playthrough later to relearn controls instead of flailing around like I did when I tried to return to an old save file a couple weeks ago.

First time I saw this “hover over certain text to get more info” thing was in Tyranny (which came out the year before Pyre), and Obsidian have used it since in Pillars 2 and Pentiment and such. I like it as a sort of soft codex where you don’t have to tab elsewhere to look things up.

Pretty sure Pyre pulls a couple tricks with it later too.

Also I’d forgotten this game has a fuckin Destiny cursor lol

Pillars 1 does that text-highlight thing too I wanna say.

Anyway I’ve had this for YEARS and never got around to it, this is a good opportunity!

Similar to games you've played: Hades, Hollow Knight
This should be fine.

I don’t remember Pillars 1 having it (it has been a while) but you’re probably right

I’m almost sure (it has been a while) that there are certain moments where a character specifically talks to you through the hover text

Oh, i have a good reason to try this now. I think this is the only supergiant game i havent played yet.

My dumbass is going to buy this again on steam, probably at full price. I don’t care. I hate my PS5 now.

I might get the Vinyl too. The theme for the old ladies might be the stankest track on a supergiant game. Those women were b-ballers and you can tell with that song

If you don’t want to buy it again I could upload the .zip from itchio onto Mega or something.

Ended up going Shae, because I forgot to check this again to see the other options, but oh well. Shae’s a good name.

Surprised my piece of crap laptop can even run this.

There’s a billion Space Jam jokes fluttering around my head, and and I feel like that was the developer’s intended reaction.

(Went with Fae, in case you’re wondering.)

The game was in the BLM itch bundle for anyone that bought that. Itch is alot better about telling you what you have in a bundle now, so you can just go to a game page and itch will tell you if you own it.

Oh shit thanks I guess I DO own it on PC then.

I’m probably going to download my itch copy because I’m tired of gaming clients
