Big Backend Updates!

Sorry for the update downtime! Here’s a rundown of everything that’s changed.

Upgraded to the new Ubuntu Version

This is important because it’ll just lead to general site stability improvements, meaning fewer 502 errors and easier future updates that don’t take 2 hours and require me to completely change the ubuntu dist URLs. Yippie

Backup changes

Backups are about 1 gig, and we now have 10 gigs on the server. I’ve changed backups to be weekly, but with a limit of 3 backups available at any time. Also, auto-deleting old backups wasn’t a default setting. Thanks discourse :)

AWS Image Hosting

I moved all image uploads to an S3 bucket. This gives us an extra 5 gigs of free image hosting space a year. Please don’t go past this LMFAO.

It also keeps images out of the Discourse backups, so keep pics you want to keep pls.

New themes

Two new themes added.

Isabelle

Can kinda work in dark mode but I haven’t found a version I like yet.

Dracula

You can pick a theme here: Auldnoir - a forum for cool peeps

That’s all, thanks

i rly like that Isabelle theme, it’s a shame my eyes demand dark mode at all times

Isabelle is really pretty, I wish I could get past it being so bright

*instantly uploads ReallyBigGiraffe.png 40960x40960 4.9GB*

me: Wait, Isabelle actually seems pretty slick with my current Dark Mode, I wonder if that was just a bad sample image?

*instantly blind from the flashbang as soon as I return to Index*

Dracula looks sweet as heck though

Dracula is my color scheme for everything so I’m happy I was able to get it in here too

I’m a big fan of Kanagawa personally

I can add kanagawa as a color palette at some point if you want

Dracula has an issue in which the New Topic button is really green and shiny and after years of idle games I have to fight against every intrusive thought to not smash it on sight

interesting, you have the dracula buttons mixed with the solarized color palette…i didn’t know you could do that

The aqua with the off-white on Isabella is really nice. The buttons and like posting elements being rounder will take some getting used to but I like it.

Yea theme and colour palette seem to be fully different from each other, I’ve got Isabelle theme with dracula colour palette and it’s pretty

Topics page still uses Isabelle’s native palette 'cause that overrides the palette option in some way, but otherwise.,

ooh I would love that :D I use the Kanagawa AnuPpuccin colours in Obsidian and I’m very normal about them

One more update!

Added an S3 CDN URL!

The Good News

For you, nothing! For me, it’ll make things cheaper LMFAO

The Bad News

I will have to rebake every image ever posted on this website! That’s fine, but y’all have actually posted a lot of images! I can check that LOL. Everything should be solid enough now that the whole website shouldn’t break for two hours, but I’ll be doing that update overnight in America so it can happen while I’m sleeping and I can check for errors afterwards (sorry overseas peeps but i must sleep)

okay that should be it, thank you

Added the Kanegawa color scheme - thanks to @crow for helping me put it together

you can change color schemes in the same place you change themes. Color schemes are mostly divorced from themes, but for best results use the default theme and apply the color scheme on top of it

if anybody finds bugs/problems in the Kanegawa scheme: that was all me LMAO please feel free to flag em/suggest better colours for stuff

On Firefox 135.0.1 (aarch64) on macOS, some notes about the new theme:

  • The name is incorrectly spelled I think? Kanegawa vs. the original Kanagawa.
  • The text color to background contrast is extremely low:

Some elements do not appear to have an inherited style (the orange color for “hot” threads, the red for “last visit”) and/or I’m not certain if they’re meant to.
