This is gonna sound really broad and I do mean it this way but any recommendations?
Like, I wanna hear about your rollator, the wheelchair accessories you love, the font that makes reading on electronic devices easier, the earplugs that help you focus, the safe food that works great for you, the book/podcast/album that changed the game for you–all of it!
It’s not an extensive list but some of my favorites are: Imani Barbarin (Crutches n Spice), Isoflex balls, f.lux, whale sounds (through the Finch app and actually the Finch app too), Crip Camp documentary, Black Disability Studies by Dr. Sami Schalk (still moving through this one but love what I’ve read so far), and recently like just learned about them today: Art of Paya!
Collecting resources/info like this has been really helpful for me lately so I thought I’d ask!
The moonlander keyboard I own is pretty pricey but it is also the greatest purchase I’ve ever made in my life and I’m not exaggerating. That thing has legitimately changed my life for the better and I’d buy it for three times the price if I needed to.
The way the keyboard is split means that I can sit properly instead of hunched over in front of it and lets my shoulder blades untense. It got rid of my hand cramps and carpal tunnel pretty much instantly. And the macro layouts you can build let you reduce finger travel and friction so much. If anyone has one and wants my setup lemme know I’ve written about it before
please don’t apologize cause this is EXACTLY what i was hoping for i love king responses
and !!! i like decolonizing fitness i also went to this thing at GDoC last week and i gotta say geek girls strong (robyn warren, a black woman!) really surprised me with their accessible workout (we did the entire workout from the chair and they showed us modifications and stuff, it was a pre-recorded thirty minute video and then they were in the chat offering tips so i just really recommend them!)
i gotta see if like my notifications are on or something cause i haven’t seen matthew cortland in a minute
I love what Bibi does i hope i can get some of her stuff soon (also do you know of Tinu? i often see Bibi supporting her too and I like the work she does)
I don’t have a lot of personal recommendations, but I’ve been thinking about getting a shower chair for a while (the shower at our current apartment is narrow and the tub is lightly curved, so it’s slightly uncomfortable to stand in). Most days it’s a non-issue, but sometimes after a long ass field day I just sit my entire ass down in the tub and I know one day my knees are gonna get mad at me so a chair is somewhat of interest.
We also used to have a bunch of miniature heating/cooling pads - like those gel packets you can put into a freezer or microwave depending on how you need to use them. Originally they were due to a Series of dental emergencies, the local endodontist just handed those out with their post-appointment goodie bags, and they were very conveniently hand-sized bc they were for teeth pain. Very handy, but all 3 of them have now been slowly winnowed down or lost.
Aside from that, Shonalika (https://www.youtube.com/@Shonalika/videos) put out 3 videos on the accommodations they use for chronic pain and their various conditions. My metamour gets great use out of their heating pad, to the point that we’re planning on buying one for ourselves once they return home. Came in really handy a couple times during their visit.
similarly not many personal recs for me. I have the Dread ADHD but most of the methods I use to manage it are fairly common sense. I do like having my calendar on the home screen of my phone so I can’t ignore it - every time I unlock my phone, there it is! it took a while to get into the habit of adding EVERYTHING to my calendar, but it has improved my life immeasurably.
would like to solicit opinions, though. anybody have any thoughts on Loop earplugs? I’ve heard good things but I had heard good things about the last pair of earplugs I bought too lol.
For my disability recommendations: if your eyes are super light sensitive, a dark mode extension for your browser is a good idea. I use Dark Reader on Firefox. It lets me customize colors which is good because usually dark grays are easiest on my eyes.
I’d give cane recommendations, but I use a cheap adjustable walmart special.
i use them for overstimulation. it’s helpful for me. i wear them anytime i go somewhere loud and/or crowded… though i have to remember to speak louder than i think i have to. your voice sounds louder while you wear them so i usually end up talking too softly.
