those prima guides were so fun, i remember the one for ocarina of time where the dude just diverted from the guide itself to question how kid zelda manages to chuck the ocarina 400 yards into the hyrule castle moat from over the shoulder WHILE on horseback lmfao, that joke has stuck with me years later
I’m gong to suggest Dr. Mario or tetris cause those are games my mom could play. She also played contra with my brother, but she told me he would get mad at her for falling behind, so maybe not lol
my ocarina of time guide was written in a narrative style that was like, “Link’s hookshot proved invaluable as he used it to pull himself up to the entrance of the Forest Temple, it was simple for him to aim the red dot at the tree branch above the steps”
this actually rules so much, I wish we still had stuff like this!
I had a magazine with a FF8 guide where they were translating every main dialogue since, well, its a jRPG. It was a thick edition with some ridiculous numbering like “Part 12” and it was only the train kidnapping segment from the very beginning (I think that’s the first or second job you do as SEEDs?)
Also I played FF7 with another guide that basically broke down everything from materia levelling, making a Gold Chocobo, fighting against the WEAPONs, getting the 4th Limit Breaks for everyone (including Aeris)
Those magazines also used to have some dope (and definitely stolen) art / fanart on them, staring at those is probably the reason why red eyes have always been such a weak spot of mine (and why I sincerely consider them Tifa’s most notable feature, yes, counting you know what)
train is your first official job as a SeeD. I remember in the guide I had it made a big deal about getting the job right because it could easily up your rank.
Side note, love that feature of just “here’s your paycheck” at certain intervals in that game. Also a pleasant thing.
My Ocarina guide was like this too; it was the “official” one published by Nintendo way back when they did those and Nintendo Power. (god I miss those magazines) It ended up being an auction prize for a charity drive. I hope whoever got it still loves it.
Want to also throw a +1 for Tetris and maybe games in the vein of Panel de Pon? And the FF pixel remasters as well for their convenience more than anything else, especially 4-6.
Update: she named Crono after me which is REALLY funny when you consider what happens
Naming main character after someone you know its a sign of massive admiration, respect, or crush but also oh no lmao
Only not worse than that one game (Lagoon?) where folks named the main character and the best friend after themselves and their crushes, only for the best friend to later end up with the antagonist turned good.
BAHAMUT LAGOON! What an UNHINGED game let me add that to the list LOL /j
Oh man, I’m imagining someone who’s never played a game before playing specifically, for their first game, the SNES version of Lagoon and cry-laughing about what an experience that would be. I don’t know what the best option is but I genuinely believe that would be up there for the worst ever.
