I think maybe my only rec might be the spruced-up version of Quest 64 on the N64 because…while I haven’t played said spruced-up version, I liked the standard version of this game enough as a kid to rent it several times. Even if I never got past the first night.
I specifically chose Earthbound in my post because of this article :3
Donald Duck: Going Quackers on the DC is a decent little Crash Bandicoot clone that isn’t anywhere near as punishing. It’s also one of the only DC games to support wide screen out of the box.
if you like being a big strong guy who smashes everything, Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is a great choice. I recommend the GC version.
Lunar Eternal Blue’s crest system was a ton of fun to mess around with. Big fan of that game as a whole.
Oooh shit, you just awakened some Donald Duck memories in me. I don’t know how soured in general Barquq in Disney properties but:
Mickey to Donald Magical Adventure 3(SNES): Played this a lot with my cousins back in the days, the mechanic of changing uniforms and getting new skills was mind blowing to us
QuackShot Starring Donald Duck(Mega Drive/Saturn): Figuring out some of the levels from this was a moment to me. I’m not sure how good the gameplay is nowadays, but it was still a good memory.
Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow(PC/SNES/Mega Drive): No idea why the theatrical name for Donald, but this is probably the most solid of the three titles. Some stylish platforming and combat, and one of the most bullshit penultimate levels in existence. Beating it as a child brought me no joy. But the previous 99% were pretty good.
sigma star saga let’s fucking gooooo lmfao
also, Legend of Legaia. fuck, i remember i had the demo and played it so many times as a kid
You ever played Adventures of Lomax? It’s good, fun colorful platformer in the Misadventures of Flink (also recommended; may as well play the Sega CD version) tradition, though it feels less obviously like an Amiga game than Flink.
If you want even more peak Euro platformer experiences, check out Puggsy. It may be a game that has Too Much Physics. Genesis version probably requires disabling save ram in your emulator to not end after 5 levels; Sega CD version has more content but it’s not necessarily better.
Night Striker is a fun Taito forward-scrolling shmup in the style of After Burner. Its aesthetic is the one that comes to mind to white people when you say “citypop”. The Sega CD version has a remixed soundtrack but is a much lower resolution than the Saturn/PS1 version.
Sengoku Turb is a colorful surrealist RPG that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Originally released for Japanese PCs but more known for its Dreamcast port. Perfect for anyone who thinks games today are too conventional and don’t take enough risks.
Blue Stinger is a survival horror game for Dreamcast that leans into absurdity/comedy more than Resident Evil did. Features the Sonic Adventure voice cast before they were known for that, and is also where the memetic drink Hassy comes from. Capcom invests so much into Resident Evil that it can’t be comparable to a b-movie, but Blue Stinger is the pinnacle of b-movie style applied to video games.
If you haven’t played Rocket Knight Adventures, play Rocket Knight Adventures. Especially if you like Contra 3 and Hard Corps. The sequels on snes and genesis are also good but lack the sheer elegance of design of the origjnal.
Sonic Unleashed for PS2 and Wii might be looked down upon compared to its cousin for PS3 and 360 but it’s great on a handheld emu device. Mostly a chill experience, and perfect for when you’re stoned or on an airplane.
Lastly, you heard about this Tony Hawk Pro Skater?
Just remembered two more hidden gems
Hagane(SNES): This looks absurdly good, has great movement and action for a 2D SNES game, and is loaded with bullshit difficulty. Only played it emulated, so thank god for save states.
Metal Warriors(SNES): Mecha action, the concept of getting out of your mech and stealing another one in the middle of a stage broke my brain as a child. Fantastic multiplayer too.
A Radiata Stories mention? LFG
Ranger-X is a fun little mecha action game. You can often go in guns blazing but a methodical approach is usually rewarded more. Stay in lit areas to recharge your super weapons.
Geograph Seal is an X68000 game that feels like an attempt to push Ranger-X into 3D, but it’s not made by the same team. Instead, it’s by the team who would make Jumping Flash, and might feel like a spiritual prequel to it.
Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love was the first one in English. It is similarly a game that is mechanical connective tissue between the first 4 games in the series and Valkyria Chronicles.
Terranigma is the Quintet game that didn’t make it to the US but should have. If you like Quintet games you owe it to yourself to play this one. If you haven’t played other Quintet games then please do – I’d advise Soul Blazer first
Ok I’m home, so i got some more suggestions from my room/memory
PS2
- Bujingai - 3D action game (DMC-like) haven’t played it yet, but it looks cool, and I bought a Japanese copy from a friend
- Shinobi - another DMC like of the classic sega franchise. seems cool, but I also haven’t played this.
- Yuyu Hakusho, dark Tournament - 2.5D fighting game. i like the art style, but I haven’t dug into the game alot as a fighting game
- Naruto Uzumaki Chronicles 1 & 2- only halfway through 1, but a fun Naruto action RPG. will make you mad they didn’t do more of these instead of redoing ultimate ninja for 20 years
- Ape Escape: Pumped and Primed - Mario Party Spinoff of the Ape Escape games. really fun and interesting. some FGC folks i know have started digging into it technically, but I think it’s neat and has a good soundtrack.
- Phantasy Star Universe: ambition of the Illumus( or something like that) - expansion to the one Phantasy Star game on PS2. (also available on windows + xbox)
- One Piece: Grand Adventure probably the best ps2 one piece game.
- Mystic Heroes- chibi dynasty warriors. kinda a BS game. but it’s grown on me recently.
- Sega classics Collection - a collection of the simple 2500 series of sega games that were released in Japan. has stuff like outrun, columns, alien syndrome, golden axe, and more.
i have, this game is fucking ass
I said this as a joke, but I looked it up, and the first Ultimate Ninja game actually came out in 2003
shoutouts to this thread for making me realise I really have not played a lot of old games
This device looks slick.
back in those days you could make a game with 5 people and a good graphing calculator, so there was a lot more available to play
There are just like. So many fucking games lmao
yeah i’m very excited for it, i’ll write my thoughts on it in detail when i grab it
also thanks y’all keep 'em coming and i’ll keep picking through what i haven’t already played
i have never seen anyone else acknowledge flying dragon in my entire life
this reminds me that there’s an SNES prequel to flying dragon. I think it’s an ok fighting game, but it has a racist character in its cast
