Small details that you appreciate in games

While there are titles and series that stand out as a whole, there are always little things that can make our gaming experiences a little smoother or more enjoyable. I decided to make this thread to highlight some of our favorites, whether its from games you’re playing at the moment or that you already finished a while ago

Right now I’m going through Octopath Traveler and being able to tell how hurt enemies are is always a good mechanic in jRPGs. Here, whenever you target an enemy, their name/title will be in different colors depending on how healthy they are. White, if they’re at full or nearly full health, yellow if they’re around halfway through, and red when they’re nearly dead. Its a good thing to have when you’re playing with a character that relies on that info to capture those enemies.

I remember bringing this up with my cousins when we were younger, playing Chrono Cross; the bosses stances changing to be more tired when they’re low in health was always nice to see, and a good indication things were going our way.

  • when you stand still and shoot bullets as bayonetta they make the shape of the letter B and then a heart on a surface
  • i remember watching a palico go through the entire process of making dough in monster hunter worlds. you can just watch them do it step by step
  • when you beat lt. surge in let’s go eevee he gives you 4160 money for winning, a very common voltage number
  • in bioshock, the candy you can buy costs significantly more in the theater area of the game than anywhere else
  • astral chain had a thing where when you were walking the game would always sync your walk cycle to the beat of the music
  • in DBZ Kakarot when you eat a meal and piccolo is in your party he sits with his arms crossed with a cup of water in front of him 'cause he’s namakian
  • in original RE2 if you stand still while escorting Sherrie she’ll hold your hand :)
  • one of my most favorite recent ones: in Rise of the Ronin you can romance every character except Koto Nakazawa, who in real life swore that she’d only marry the man that could beat her in a duel, which no one ever did

This doesn’t matter anymore but I remember when I cut a sign in OOT and the pieces landed in the water. That stuck with me for some reason, I guess it was just an indicator (or sign even) that games were about to be on an entirely different level after the SNES and GB

The first one that comes to mind for me is when you recruit Poo in Earthbound, he can only heal HP with food from Dalaam, his home country. If you feed him anything else like a burger he barely benefits from it. He also gets 10 PP from bottled water while everyone else gets 1.

I always notice little details when I’m playing a game and then I forget them immediately. will post here the next time I notice one. o7

I had no idea, that’s cute. Reminded me of Symphony of Night, where if you stand still for a while the Fairy will sit on Alucard’s shoulder. You can then be a dick and start running, letting her fall.

Another little detail is that every time Lara gets out of the water in Rise of the Tomb Rider, she will dry her pony tail. IDK why but it stuck with me.

OOT has so many little things. One mind blowing was watching my cousin use Epona to jump across the broken bridge rather than fixing it, while I was egging him for even thinking about it. Another is winning a cow? That you can take home, and milk for free? Like, its such an inconsequential prize but its so fucking fun that you just get to own a cow.

Very Revie answer BUT All the little idle animations that happen around the campfires in Xenoblade 3 do so much to establish the personalities of the main characters and show how they change over the course of the game.

So to skip Steambot Chronicles cuz I feel like that post would be too long

My favorite Pokémon games are XY, the clothing customization in that game is amazing but more than anything, there is one thing that only those games have in the series and no others

They are the only games where you are allowed to sit on just any random bench/chair you see, and several of them change the camera angle to show more of the scenery and I’ve always really, really loved that

Also doing rollerblade tricks was very fun and I’ve been disappointed that they haven’t been brought back yet

It’s 2024 and not enough games that give you cosmetic changes show them in cutscenes, this feature has always been my favorite little thing.

The first Xenoblade is wild for not only doing this, but also late in the game there’s this long-ass flashback and the game remembers EVERY piece of armor you were wearing in every cutscene it’s actually unreal

true actually I was playing Inquisition and they show a scene from before the beginning of the game but your character is wearing their current armour and it’s like. damn.

I never finished the Xenoblade but every time it kept doing flash backs, I was wondering if it was actually remembering what I worn or I was just being gaslighted since there were so many different combinations and I couldn’t possibly remember all of them

at the end of the prologue the bikini armor was the strongest armor i had so any time it flashed back to fiora getting brutally murdered she was wearing a bikini

it was very silly

Not a game that I’m playing but rather one that I’m watching: in Case 1-3 of Ace Attorney, you have to get the testimony from a 7 year old boy. Since he’s too short for the stand, the Judge asks if the bailiff can get a box for him to stand on while being cross examined. When you get a full view of the courtroom, you can see that his sprite is indeed standing atop of a box

Underrail had a detail where you could find someone’s laptop that had an option that said “play Underrail”. If you picked it it just kicked you back to the game from the dialogue menu. Fun little joke.

When each expansion came out, they updated the joke with the name of the current expansion.

I think another thing I miss is when intros used to go all out. Where’s a good ol fashioned attract mode?
