What are you playing?

Oh Rudger’s Adventure is SIGNIFICANTLY more complicated than Nei’s or Eusis’, not to mention longer, and with more progress gates that just… aren’t really intuitive (Use the staff on the old man to give it to him, and he’ll trade you a shotgun? There’s not a single enemy between when you get the knife, and when you can upgrade the knife, and you need to upgrade it to stand a chance against the next enemy, unless you pour water on it?). It IS still interesting, and I do like the subtle (potentially unintentional) implication that he’s not from Motavia, or is and is proud of his Motavian heritage, since the narration keeps noting all the interesting Motavian culture and wildlife. Main game is neat so far though, really cool to see what stuff from it got reused and expanded on for the text adventures

Two Factorio achievements for doing planetary science with some additional restrictions

Well that one took a while. I fled to Vulcanus as quickly as possible and built my main base over there instead of on Nauvis. Rebuilding a space platform on Vulcanus (because my original minimal one exploded in orbit) kinda sucks, because you have to constantly have turrets up to protect yourself from the asteroids.

There’s another “missable” achievement that I managed to avoid failing on this savefile–destroying my first ever biter nest with artillery (which is unlocked on Vulcanus; and means that while back on Nauvis, I’m not allowed to fight back at all. That’s why I fled as soon as I could lmao)

i impulse bought Beyond Citadel last night and god i love it.
the movement is fun. i really love the gunplay, very fun to have to do empty/reload/cock instead of just pressing R (though you can change this anytime). the guns feel good too, the shotguns and mid-long range rifles are my favs. so satisfying to run up and obliterate an enemy before running for cover, or to pick them off from afar with a well placed shot.
the control scheme and all the things you have to manage can get a bit overwhelming for me (spamming left click while caught in the line of fire, having forgotten i need to cock my shotgun) but i think i’ve more or less got the hang of it.
the game’s vibes are immaculate. it’s doom-style 2D sprites in a 3D environment. all the visuals, the fluctuations in tone/composition of the music, along with the slight jank here and there just. chef’s kiss. i don’t really have a basis for why it feels like this but it reminds me of finding a random RPGmaker game or something.
it’s important to note that the game is gratuitously gory/violent, gratuitously horny, and gratuitously horny about the gratuitous gore/violence. there are options to turn that off/tone it down tho if you don’t like that. actually the game seems to have good amount of nice options for customizing your experience which is cool.

I finished the Amon fight, and I have mixed feelings about it. I think it was a great boss fight, and bullshit in alot of the right ways. It reveals alot that I don’t like about Y6 combat (like how rush into heavy isn’t a true combo), but finishing it feels like a load off my back, and the last thing I needed to do before finishing the whole game.

While I do hate all the robots, they do keep the fight from just being the tiger drop rhythm game. I wanted to win the fight without using health items, but Amon’s bot’s had hands, and I don’t quite have the emotional/mental constitution to bang my head against a superboss( with self imposed restrictions).

And rolled credits on Yakuza 6, works as a nice bookend for Kiryu’s saga I still maintain that bookend shoulda been at Yakuza 3, but I’m not gonna be a messy bitch about it

Download Like A Dragon now, but I’m a little unsure if I wanna go straight into another Yakuza game, or play the Sword Art Game i got a while ago for some good comfort food.

Alright, I’m much more consistently getting to Dracula in Dracula’s Curse, and I’ve gotten as far as the last hit of the second phase, at which point I died because I wasn’t yet planning ahead about what items to use so Trevor had a stopwatch even though I can make sure I’ve got the stopwatch for the part where I need it and still go into Dracula with an axe and the fireball. I know I said the same thing last week, before I knew Dracula’s castle had its own set of four levels, but I really think I’m beating this game today

Decided to open up Y7 and whoa english jumpscare. I was sorta practing my japanese, so i might change it back, but i love me some english dubs.

the English dub is pretty good, tbh. There’s also an additional gag in one of the substories that was suggested by an American fan, iirc? Barquq mentioned it to me

It is, but i prefer ENG over JP dubs regardless of the quality. We’ve talked about this elsewhere in the forum, but i prefer ENG dubs becuase english is my language. I do wanna listen/read subbed media more to practice, but overall english is my best language so it’s my preferred one to enjoy media with.

I really need to devote some time to Judgement cause I wanna actually get into the game. Right now, I’m still very much in the set up phase, so I have access to a very small amount of things that can be done in the game.

I have determined that if I can make it to Dracula’s final form with at least 16 hearts, I have a more or less guaranteed (At the very least fairly easy) victory; looks like his attacks are pretty easy to dodge by just camping in one corner and throwing axes from a bit closer to the center. This is possible if I learn the first two phases with just the whip, but if I can get to him from the start of the level instead of the checkpoint then I can still use Sypha’s fire magic to melt through the first phase and more axes to get through the second without worrying as much about getting cornered. So even if today is looking a lot shakier, after all those chores and learning I have a 4am shift tomorrow… I’m definitely clearing it soon.

GET FUCKED DRACULA, CASTLEVANIA 3 FINISHED
Not sure what I’m gonna be playing next, aside from PSII, but I think resuming Lament of Innocence or starting on one of the gba games are both viable, and I wanna check my steam library (and wishlist) for other options as well (Off the top of my head, Is This Game Trying to Kill Me? and Myst are on my mind, and I might also finally get to Gregory Horror Show, via pcsx2)
I also ended up getting a late christmas gift of a 50 dollar amazon gift card from my grandma, so I’ve got the bluray of the first two seasons of the Castlevania anime arriving tomorrow, which I’ll probably start on as well

Went back to STALKER 2. Apparently at some point they released an update that just fully bricks the game at the texture-warming step! (Luckily someone figured out how to turn that off but god what an annoying discovery)

Another accomplishment from last night, I also cleared Rudger’s Adventure for Phantasy Star II. Its not as good as the first two. The puzzles make less sense, the story isn’t as interesting (or present), there’s WAY too many things to use so even if you use a guide and only grab the essentials, you still end up needing to drop stuff, the combat is weirdly demanding considering its all pure dice rolls and there’s no save function… If I’m using these side stories to inform who I want in my party, Rudger is an easy, early cut

Played Mini Reaper, which I saw in the EEK3 showcase. Super fun small game, what if you were doing a slendy thing in Mario 64 Big Boo’s Haunt. If you get caught by the scary skeleton face making loud sounds you have to start the game all over, but since it’s Mario 64 and you have a really speedy longjump a winning run can be done in a matter of minutes so losing isn’t a big deal. It’s all about memorizing where all 13 tokens you need to grab are, figuring out a good route to grab em, and getting lucky with the skeleton movement while not bonking on anything.

As I get my first death in Phantasy Star, I am reminded that this game takes a rather… unorthodox approach to the problem of avoiding the narrative dissonance of death being important in the story and a minor inconvenciance in the gameplay. Specifically, dead characters are dead, no question, end of story. BUT: you can clone them at cloning facilities, and the clone remembers everything the original did. This is functionally no different from a phoenix down, or a revival bead, or a visit to the church for a resurrection, but its still… such a wild decision, absolutely unhinged worldbuilding. And its referenced in the text adventures as well! You can visit a cloning facility in Nei’s Adventure, and you get the same “Welcome to the cloning facility, is there anyone you want to bring back?” welcome text, (Plus some microagressions thrown in because everyone in Paseo is racist except for Eusis and this one random kid you can meet)

Question for anyone that’s played Y7: does the job system sorta work like FF3 where you have to be careful not to grind too much using a particular job because it’ll affect your stats? or can I just switch jobs willy nilly without worrying too much about it?
