oh in terms of non-television - I’ve been slowly burning through the “Who TF Did I Marry?” tiktok saga, a four-ish hour series of videos from a lady talking about her ex-husband and all the wild shit he did. It is very compelling and has blown all the way up in what I can’t describe as anything else but “normie social circles” (affectionate)
Just started watching Dungeon Meshi (literally only one ep in), will probably continue since it seems to be up my alley so far (I really liked Isekai Izakaya Nobu for the most part). I’m also watching Run With the Wind with some other friends on their Guilded server, though I’ve missed a bunch of episodes ^^
Most of the time I rewatch things because I pretty much need background noise+visual+story to function but I Will get distracted if it’s too intense or new. Because of that I also watch a fair amount of kids shows (like Supa Team 4 and Dinotrux) bc high energy, bright visuals, and simple, optimistic plots are great for that purpose Other executive dysfunction rewatch companions include ST: DS9 and Murder She Wrote, there are channels that just run through both series 24/7 so it’s easy and I don’t have to decide on specific eps.
I tend to prefer generally lighthearted fantasy, scifi, action, heist shenanigans, East Asian historical fiction, and the occasional variety show. I’ve watched and can appreciate more dramatic/arthouse/grimdark fare but these days I need a lot more energy to be up for watching new stuff in that vein than I used to.
i have a playlist of 1 to 3 hour youtube videos that i just loop while i do other shit. i feel like i should watch more new things more often, but the idea of expending that much energy on new stuff makes me exhausted just thinking about it lol
Not quite historical but I’m planning to watch Warrior and it might be up your alley, i’ll let you know if it’s any good!
Any Dota fans here? Mostly been watching DreamLeague 22 while working. EU tournament time means there are matches all throughout the workday while keeping my evenings clear for family time and other activities.
Ooh always nice when things work out like that, this was me during Capcom Cup X qualifiers lol.
I’ve ironically only watched the Dota netflix show (it was pretty good!) but I never really got into Mobas. Is Dota pretty readable for a newcomer? I might add it to my white noise generator as I try to power through this sickness
It’s not great for someone totally unfamiliar with the game/genre, but the big moments might still be entertaining. Casters and production tend to make more of an effort to integrate new viewers at The International since crossover viewership is so high, but this is an early season tourney so expects an enthusiast audience.
I think the major barrier is just tolerating esports in general, so you’ve already got the advantage over most people.
I’d say give it a shot! Dota is a fantastic game to watch once you get over the initial hump.
I’ve been watching Frieren, Dungeon Meshi, Apothecary Diaries, and Sign of Affection. I really love all of them! What a good season of anime this has been. Some others have noted that the tournament arc in Frieren feels weird and I agree, but yeah the show is really getting carried on its animation quality. And for me, Fern, who I adore to an unreasonable degree.
Sign of Affection has been the biggest surprise for me in just how good it is. I think this might be my new favorite romance anime? All of the characters are great, even the side ones, and I like how there’s drama, but it feels pretty reasonable and isn’t drawn out to ridiculous lengths. And of course the way they handle signing and lip-reading is neat, at least to my unfamiliar eyes. I can’t say I’ve watched many shows that centered on deaf/HoH characters.
Ooo check out A Silent Voice if you haven’t! The movie imo is better than the manga in a lot of ways and has a deaf female lead, one of my favorite anime movies ever
I’ve been watching the first season of Konosuba with a friend(He wanted to see it and I was curious) as well as Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. ZZ is a rewatch for me, and new for him.
I have not watched so I can’t attest to its quality, but Ranking of Kings little protagonist is deaf as well, and I think it has good use of sign language
I have seen Silent Voice! I liked it but man… it’s so sad… I think I spent most of that movie crying. Even though happy things happened it takes me a while to stop crying from something sad lol. But it was a very beautiful movie, in many different ways.
I watched season 1 and I really loved it at first, but it started to feel a bit repetitive towards the end. The way other characters were always crying over Bojji… I don’t know, it started to feel weird to me.
I will say, since we’ve brought these two shows up, one thing I really like about Sign of Affection is there’s more focus on the small daily realities of communicating… Like there are more hearing characters who know/are learning sign, and while Yuki, the protagonist, can lip-read, sometimes she’ll miss things because someone passed their hand over their face or confuse words that have similar mouth-shapes. But it is kind of a slice-of-life show, so of course it’d be more concerned with minutiae than a fantasy epic like Ranking of Kings.
I’ve been watching a decent amount of anime recently. Watching the bigs of this and last season, Frieren, Apothecary Diaries, Dungeon Meshi. I’ve also been watching Shangri-la Frontier and I really enjoy it. I enjoy portal fantasy, I’m a fan of iseaki but will be the 1st to admit that the space feels oversaturated and full of slop. That said I’m glad I gave this a chance. They’re not stuck in an mmo, the mc isn’t an incel, he’s just a GAMER who’s developed his skills playing bad games and decides to give a new but popular AAA game a shot. To me, as an mmo sicko, it captures the vibe of when I was a teen playing a new mmo in awe of the scale and options available. The friendship between the main cast is cute and also feels very much of a kind of online relationship. It’s a fun shounen! I enjoy watching it while I eat breakfast.
Oh shit I forgot my partner and I were watching that we still need to finish it.
We also need to finish the Percy Jackson show I think we had like one episode or maybe two left?
Apothecary Diaries is a riot. Sort of like House actually, where she’s solving medical mysteries, but because she’s working at a palace housing a harem of the emperor’s wives, there’s a lot of ridiculous nonsense happening too. It’s very entertaining.
Percy Jackson is a great adaptation of the series, sooooo much better than the movies from last decade. Doing some slight shifting around of characterization and representation but it’s all fantastic choices allowing Riordan to build up some of the themes he hadn’t fully nailed down in the early books.
