Aeta's science corner

I cover emerging research in my work as a science journalist! I’ll share those things here in case people want to read them. This is better than posting 100 times in “something new I’ve learned recently” and all the posts are about physics.

(I really like the dek [funny preview sentence] my editor wrote for this one haha)

Ooh, thanks for sharing. I remember watching a video about this fact a couple years back (one of the guest videos on Tom Scott’s channel, done by a kid science creator iirc). Gonna give this a read to see it in more detail.

interesting new study showing that a mixture of bio-compatible peptides (amino acid chains) and polymers (hyularonic acid, which is very like naturally occurring body fluids) can stimulate more growth of cartilage. this is a holy grail of science because cartilage is stubborn and so slow its growth is nearly undetectable. this study was done on sheep, not people yet. i also mention a couple of other projects working on cartilage, but this one doesn’t seem age- or health-gated – it’s simply an injection. so could be appropriate for elderly people, etc. who aren’t good candidates for surgery.

The human body is so weird! It’s cool that we can potentially trick it into repairing that damage though.
