Hello! Here’s a topic for people who enjoy any kind of handicrafts. That’s your pottery, woodworking/carving, fibre arts of any kind, sculpture, metalworking, origami, bookbinding, jewelry-making, candle-making, soap-making, et cetera et cetera - if you craft anything, I wanna know about it and I wanna see it! Gimme pics!
Feel free to plug any shops here as well, if anyone sells their crafts. :D
we don’t do sculpture often but it is fun. here’s one we made
Warning for body horror and gore/blood in sculpture
This is a sculpture we started in february. It was made as a way to purge stress/horror media-induced derealization feelings out of our brain and into art. Meant to resemble a corpse in a body bag. silent hill vibes i guess (which makes the fact it accidentally looks a bit like a dick fitting huh). It’s technically unfinished, but i don’t know if we’ll ever actually work on it more.
Materials used: makeup mirror given to us by our father trying to be supportive of our transition (we don’t wear makeup), old used disposable shaving razor (the base upon which the body was built), air-dry clay, aluminum craft wire, packing tape, and copious amounts of red acrylic paint and glossy modpodge.
these are old pics, but I did a Solaire cosplay in like… idk, 2017? I made a lot of it myself and hand-painted the tabard. was genuinely pleased with how it came out! I’d like to refit/upgrade it some time for another con, now that I have some more money and craft skill lol.
I retaught myself basic sewing and started making myself clothes some years back. I’m obsessed with the color purple, and it’s impossible to find purple clothes over here, so I finally had enough one day and decided to take matters into my own hands. I mainly make myself skirts, just because they’re so simple to make, just cut out two rectangles, a long waistband length, two sets of beans for pockets on the insides of the side seams if you want, then stitch everything together with an elastic inside the waistband for braindead fitting, ta-da!
However… When my sister started having kids, I made the mistake of volunteering myself as the sibling who makes clothes for the kids on their birthdays and christmas. My niece’s birthday is coming up, so it’s time to make her something. Luckily I have a really nice fabric store near me which sells tons of fabrics with pretty or cute patterns on them, and I found a super cute animal fabric to use this time.
Just need to do the collar and hem the bottom and then it’s all ready for the party on sunday!! But… It feels kind of big… I asked my sister for the kid’s size and apparently she is tall for her age but she’s only turning 3, and my sister said she’s around size 104-110 right now… So I’ve been making size 110, but 110 is apparently for 4-5 year olds!? I only see the kid once a month or so so I don’t have a great mental image of her size but this really feels way too big… I guess there’s no harm in gifting clothes too big but I’m gonna feel kind of embarrassed if she’s not gonna be able to wear this for like a year…
omg… i sit down to bang out this christmas spiderman dress in one go, reusing the pattern from last time because im lazy. and i get to the final step of attaching the collar and realize… this collar piece was supposed to be cut out folded in half, and i dont have enough of the leftover blue scrap fabric im using to cut out a piece long enough. i dont remember where i bought this blue fabric ill have to go around to my usual stores next weekend and see if i can find this same fabric otherwise its either gonna drive me crazy that the accents dont match or ill just have to redo the arms.
Oh shit, I forgot this thread existed. This might be good.
Asked @TheGhostQueens last night about trying to make a trans flag colored scalemail wreath (we cannot hang flags on our front door, but a wreath is for sure acceptable). Couple logistics problems still in the air, but it’d be a nice thing to have.
Also I have been trying to revive a zine I was working on, about my transition and graduate thesis. Using my thesis topic as a lens to talk about going on HRT and making myself. It’s good shit but I gotta finish the dang thing if I ever want to show it to people or put it on itch.
Fixed my mistake from last week and finished the spidey dress. I could find similar but not exaaaactly the same fabric I’d used for accents last week so I decided to just redo the sleeves. I’m in a massive sewing mood now I wanna make my own purple backpack (found a diy blogpost I like that looks super simple) and there’s like 3 skirts I’ve been sitting on fabric for for ages that I wanna finally bang out now. I’ll be good and do the shirt christmas present for my nephew first though!! I’ll cut out patterns and start a bit tomorrow.
