you probably saw the cohost post and its dire implications, which are so dire it even showed up on The Verge this morning (wtf).
ANYWAYS Cohost is the only place I’ve “advertised” Auldnoir and I’m probably going to stop doing that soon or do it with some heavy caveats for this exact reason. it’s cool so many people have joined and i’d be happy to have more, but i’m worried about the potential bumrush of people that might see “new social media site!” i do not have the mental OR physical capacity for that.
the former is probably self-explanatory, but for context on the latter, this is what Auldnoir is currently running on:
as noted, it costs me about $7 a month. i can afford this! it causes no issues with our current size, and should scale to anywhere between 100-200 users. This all changes depending on post and chat frequency. future bumps aren’t super expensive either, just irritating because you can’t downscale afterwards: so if people swarm the site and then leave, i get stuck with a bill for no reason. but so far so good on this end.
Bigger issues arise when it comes the mail service provider I’m using, mailgun - auldnoir is allowed to send 5000 emails for free a month, then it bumps into a price range that would hit my wallet in a way that i am not prepped for at $35 a month. i could sustain this but i also don’t want to??? so i’d probably ask for donations to cover some of it at least.
all that said i’m just generally being cautious about how this place is presented. i am happy i created it in case cohost has to bow out, but if anyone asks: this is not meant to be a replacement for Cohost, nor will that ever be the case. I’ll be happy if it thrives with a midsized, diverse range of users, but i’m definitely not asking for, nor can i handle, more than that.
that’s all! we’ll see what happens from here. thanks to everyone that’s been hanging out here!
