Matt Mullenweg: ‘WordPress.org just belongs to me’

“The analogy I made is they got Al Capone for taxes,” Mullenweg says. “So, if a company was making half a billion dollars from WordPress and contributing back about $100,000 a year, yes, I would be trying to get them to contribute more.”

Sir, what would say about an individual who makes millions or billions and only pays a tiny amount in that in taxes for the government, I am very curious

it’s wild how openly he’s suggesting that His Own Employees could only disagree as a result of “misinformation” (his categorization of his opponents)

this all has “you can’t talk to me this way in my house!” boomer dad vibes

Oh my god what is his deal

Im still fuzzy on the relationship between WordPress and WordPress. One is the like… Tools you can download and one is the blogging site that is also owns Tumblr yeah?

Or am I misunderstanding the situation

I was going to say that, from my shallow understanding, this would be if Twitter started a war against TweetDeck, but that did happen, so

mullenweg owns Automattic, which owns Wordpress.com and Tumblr as well as Pocket Casts. (NPR bought pocket casts in 2018 and sold it in 2021, which is confusing??)

wordpress.org is like the foundation site for the actual open source wordpress CMS itself, as opposed to the places that host and sell hosting of wordpress blogs. Like if you go to wordpress.com and start a blog you’ll be jama.wordpress.com and never .org. It’s similar to how cable providers use like, xfinity.com as their website then xfinity.NET as their email domain.

WP Engine is a third party that also sells hosted wordpress blogs and sites.

mullenweg’s attack on WP engine has drawn a lot of attention to how he has mingled his silos of work. he cross pollinates employees and seems to also demand free labor toward wordpress.org from different parties, separately from their actual jobs at the actual company Automattic. idk it’s kinda like if they made you contribute to a wiki for hours a week that was separate from your job and not compensated. if wordpress.org is really only mullenweg in leadership, then his attempt to strangle wordpress.COM’s competition seems monopolistic, and his insistence that everyone contribute work hours to wordpress.org projects is even more distasteful.
