Nintendo president teases Switch successor

This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.

My partner told me about this earlier today. Kinda spitballed that we won’t hear about it again until maybe January 2025 for a release sometime next year or the following year, though it really depends on if unveiling it would hurt holiday console sales.

also ngl kinda nervous they’ll carry over Switch digital purchases to the next console but it won’t be physically backwards compatible

according to leaks it’ll be fully backwards compatible. it fucking better be.

It would be an impossibly large own-goal to not make it backwards compatible, which is why I considered they’d do it.

i wish they did some weird shit this time tho. that’s the biggest bummer in a post-Iwata world. you know he’d be cookin up a controller that you have to bonk against the table to press the A button or whatever

we’ll see but i personally doubt! the switch is good at many things but it’s so fucking boring. it doesn’t even have themes. or shop music! where is my Wii Shop Wednesday??

I think almost two decades of being behind the Competitive Hardware Front tells us that Nintendo will make a console with specs fairly inferior to the Steam Deck/PS5/XBX, but also will be like, $299-$349, so a chunk cheaper than the competitors.

nah it’d be terrible LOL.

what i really want is for nintendo to make an actual handheld again, so that you can get weird shit like pushmo and denpa men and some overpriced banger from Atlus. we never will but i miss that A (as opposed to AA or AAA) handheld game space
