Spotify is down

damn if only there was a way to avoid this

I may be stupid; what are you referring to by “a way to avoid this”. Is it spotify having better internal architecture or there being less of a monopoly on music streaming platforms?

LMAO I was listening to my tunes while fiddling with Tabletop stuff and until I saw this I was wondering if maybe I had finally been banned for circumventing Premium

I suspect what is meant is “what if we all just didn’t use Spotify” LMAO

i think what barquq means is by not using spotify haha.

which i am guilty of still doing :( i tried to set up that one rss feed email thing for new releases (begins with an m, can’t think of the name), but i find new releases first on spotify every time unfortunately. :pensive:

i don’t blame anyone for using spotify btw this isn’t a judgemental post. things that reduce friction will always be popular. i just think the friction-reduction is being outpaced by the enshittification at this point LOL

no you’re like EXACTLY RIGHT it’s just… am lazy. i’m slowly working on cobbling together my music library from soulseek and Other Sources but it’s hard when i’m not a big album guy i’m a “likes one song from one album by this artist and That’s It” guy a lot of the time

but no yeah. i wonder if it’s Just Spotify or another like, cloudflare thing like if we’re gonna be seeing other services down here shortly or smth

ya that’s how it is for me… weirdly I’m not a big Music Guy so the initiation effort it would take for me to switch off Spotify is too high to bother atm. I may have a random spike of energy that pushes me to do it at some point though.

how do you all find new music? i’m not as reliant on spotify for discovery as i used to be, so my other options are irl, chat servers, and clicking around youtube and soundcloud hoping to find something good, occasionally bandcamp editorial cranks out decent recs

I get my music recommendations from maybe three sources max:

  • specific friends
  • one specific forum/Discord server that isn’t this one
  • this forum

I also followed surasshu on Cohost for a while and got recommendations that way as well. Recs from other musicians are, as spinning-valiant said, interesting!

I’ve been tempted at various points to kill it. This is the post that really provided a reasonable alternative for me because “getting all this shit on my phone by hooking it up to my computer like it’s the 2000’s” is something I don’t really ever intend to go back to.

I like to browse the music collections on the internet archive to find new music
It’s nice because I can listen to it un my browser and if I like it I can download it right there

Cohost on bandcamp fridays was a good spot. Sometimes i find new stuff from youtube, but i need to expand my horizons for music discovery. I kinda wanna try doing a media server. I did it a long time ago when i had a ps3 as my main console.

Setting up a media server is great and more people should do it

Perpetual “at some point” goal to switch to an android phone build a digital library and set up a media server…

Aside from not using spotify due to distrust of subscription services, something inscrutable about spotify’s web backend - whether it’s the actual website, or just a widget/embed on another site - causes our decade old secondary monitor to limit and scramble its colour palette.
