It’s funny, my first chosen name came about through erotic furry roleplay and then sort of became my online name and then became my name and then my legal name, and now it’s no longer my name because it’s the name the government and my parents and people at work call me and that no longer feels like Me. So now I have a new name just from nowhere really, ‘revie’ doesn’t really have an origin story, while my boss calls me by the name of my femboy fox fursona from when I was 19.

I get non-white students who make that joke about themselves in class sometimes and like… how do you explain to a 13 year old that even if they think they’re being funny they’re perpetuating a racist stereotype and only solidifying what the more bigoted students say behind their back. Kid they’re not always laughing with you.

Usually they don’t think they’re being funny, they know the other kids aren’t laughing with them. They just think, “if I make that joke first before anyone else has a chance to use it against me, it won’t hurt as much.” It’s an inaccurate assumption but an understandable one, and it’s all they have to work with.
Kids who make those kinds of jokes about themselves often feel like they don’t have a lot of choices for social survival and to an extent, it doesn’t really matter if faculty are on their side or not (specifically, in the moment, it doesn’t really matter to them—it does matter in the grand scheme of things) if the kids around them come from families who are only interested in upholding white supremacy.
But, I also don’t really know how to explain to the kids from a faculty standpoint either, sometimes they won’t listen no matter who tells them, because they convince themselves they “have to” stay in these social groups. It’s rough.

today’s agenda:
- finish work stuff with mom
- clean up and tidy the pantry (assuming I don’t have to do extra work stuff)
- If I do have to do some work stuff: go out and get an extra bag or crate of apples from parent’s house
- If I don’t have to go out: after cleaning pantry, Make some apple turnovers
- work my ass off on fanbook stuff for the check-in date
