What are you playing?

I have to say that “you actually are encouraged to use multiple buttons” is certainly an improvement over the original, which felt like it wanted you to really just juice up one button. Might give it a go. Price is certainly right.

Ran into the first thing I didn’t like! But it’s pretty fixable, since it’s a specific bossfight.

Details

There’s a chimera boss in the trialmaster’s challenge that you fight on a series of terraces with stairs. The boss:

  • constantly runs away
  • constantly drops long-lasting puddles

Makes it a dogshit experience where you spend a lot of time just waiting for some puddles to disappear (because EVERY place is a chokepoint) or to regenerate while nothing happens, because actively chasing the boss will get you killed.

I didn’t realize the funny cactuar quest I was going on led to a superboss. And sometimes you decide to just spend 5 hours of your sunday banging your head against a superboss even though you’re not doing anything resembling a completionist playthrough just because it’s fun. >:) Had to learn its patterns and figure out how to rush it down to get it stuck in a loop of just ressing its adds instead of doing any of its dangerous attacks, and also avoid the dangerous attacks of those adds, until I could find breathing room between turns to job change over to buff everyone up to kill those adds as well as the boss even faster and just secure the loop. Gaming!!!

Oh my god FINALLY got the last base-game unlock in Vampire Survivors. Still got some patch content to unlock, not to mention the DLCs, but this the one that’s been bugging me. Funny enough, I also got one of the Secrets that’s been bothering me for a while in the same run, and it happened while I was trying to unlock something in the Foscari DLC (which I just figured out. But that run was hectic enough I wanna take a quick break, and clearly the best way to do that is to play my latest brain twister VN obsession. At least I think I have a picture of what’s going on, playing as the kid first was definitely the right choice for maximum brain fuck, it seems)

Decided to give Against The Storm another attempt. Now I know upfront what the expected way to play is, so it’ll most likely run a little smoother, but overall its still a novel - and perhaps not entirely my preferred - way of having a city builder.

Still good as a podcast game, which is what I was looking for, so that’s a relief by itself.

I feel like we should set a date for some festive Auldnoir webfishing… anybody know a good scheduling tool? I haven’t used them in years

:mushroom:: We like when2meet! It automatically adjusts for time zones and can be used for either a range of dates or weekly repeated schedules :D

anybody who’s interested in a lil December webfishing get-together pls put your availability in :D

tbh I had no idea when might suit people so I just put in 4-10 GMT for the next couple weekends? I figured evening Europe time / afternoon US time and on a weekend is probably most likely to be convenient for the most people :thonk1:

Tried getting into Stalker 2. I think it’s a game I’d like but I’ve decided that it’s too scary for me!

I need to take a pokemon break so I’m playing Baba is You again. First playthrough I full cleared the first 4 areas, was working on the fifth, loving the game but then I put it down for a few days to process a puzzle and my focus drifted to other games.

Second playthrough (~1yr later) I started a new file and was curious to see how much faster I’d be able to reach the same point as the 1st playthrough. It lost my attention before I hit the same spot but I did retain a lot and was solving faster.

Third time now. I’m starting from the beginning again to refresh myself with how to think about the game. Not paying attention to speed as much as how differently I’m solving them. I can’t always explicitly remember what I did in run 1 or 2 but I have a general impression for how I solved them and my approach this time around is noticebly different. I keep thinking to myself
“That’s not how I solved it last time”. Not worse or better, just different.

I genuinely don’t know how I played through moments like the psychic attack mutant in the sewers in the first game (DON’T ZOOM IN ON SPOOKY FACES THANKS), or the invisible guys jumpscaring you, or just the lab segments in general from the first game. Game’s haunted.

Invisible fellas coming at you or stalking you is a big scare for me. Had to bump Death Stranding down to where those encounters are trivial. The Reaper Leviathan (Subnautica) too, it’s not invisible but programed to follow you and come from behind.

That Subnautica? I can’t play that game for longer than 30 seconds before the thalassophobia comes crashing in from all directions lmao, literal nightmare hell for me

I’m both terrified and deeply fascinated by the sea so I powered through for a bit and had to stop when I needed to start going way deeper. The multiplayer option seems cool since I can close my eyes and have someone else drive.

The decision to put a pause in the song Zweitestock, in Ever17, was a masterful one, its managed to line up with both in-game twists and irl revalations several times now, and lemme tell you, having that eureka moment coupled with the music completely cutting out is incredible. My hat is off to you, Takeshi Abo. I already wanted to check out Steins;Gate, but now I think I need to put it on my short list, considering he also did the music for that series

playing:

path of exile 2 is fun as hell, imma see if people want to do it multiplayer. might even grab it again on my PS5 so i can play it on the couch (i tried via my Steam Deck Dock…NOPE)

mega man star force DX: Dipping my toes into this before jumping into Battle Network 6 for a replay. This is a romhack with some QOL added which is nice. It seems fun so far, if less complex than the original series.

Fantasian: Neo Dimension. Hironobu Sakaguchi just doing it for the love of the game at this point. Good for him. i played this before on Apple Arcade (which most people don’t realize means you can play it on your Apple TV or Macbook because it natively runs on all of those) but i actually gave up because it was legitimately too hard and i’m too old for that sort of time-sink. but the port moved the original difficulty to hard mode so hopefully part 2 will be easier this time.

Marvel Rivals. Better than I expected. Needs some polishing but not a bad time. Playing support as usual. More fun with a full-stack. Cloak & Dagger my beloved.

finished:

Tales of Destiny: Director’s Cut. Great combat and fun characters but the usual “tales slog” with that final third. Possibly the worst dungeons in any Tales game as well.

davg update:
i have earned mythal’s favor (used a guide LOL) AND beaten the blighted dragon in the crossroads. the latter was a lot easier than i thought LMAO i was putting it off but the former helped with the latter a lot. now time to do a bunch of side quests before continuing the main story

Hearing that Marvel Rivals has a couple moderately deep cuts (deep enough, at least, that I didn’t know everyone in the game off the top of my head, and recognized a few as definitely not being MCU characters) that I gave in and looked a bit closer. And doing that got me interested in Cloak and Dagger, because I loved stance change characters in fighting games before I gave those up, but couldn’t ever find one that I quite grokked… and now I’ve played enough games to say I’m having fun. idk how long that fun will last, but… I’m playing it, they got me. I want to play other characters but I’m still in the “No one wants to play anything but dps” phase of the game and none of the tanks really strike me as interesting (Maybe Penny?), and I’m having enough fun with Cloak and Dagger that I don’t much mind it regardless.
