:mushroom:: Nine Sols has the kind of final boss fight i could fight for YEARS and not get tired of, i think
it just has such a good rhythm to it, fantastic music, and acts as a really cool culmination both of the skills you’ve learned throughout the game and the main character’s growth
also i can now defeat her without actually attacking her at all and that’s not biasing my opinion at all

Wait How The Fuck

First ending in Ever17 down! It definitely Did Not answer any questions nor was it super satisfying on its own. I can see the reasoning for it (to better incentivize going back for other endings and to get a better idea of everything that’s going down, who’s making what decisions when you’re not piloting them, trying to make sure everyone knows what they need to to solve the puzzles that you the player can’t actually see the first time around…), but I have to admit that I think Zero Escape and AI do it better, by having their anti-climactic “Why not try again and see what you can learn?” endings be, as a rule, shitty and tragic and lethal. But, I was sort of expecting that (although I was definitely hoping it’d at least be shitty and tragic and lethal…), so lets see what happens the second time!

given that I love Zero Escape passionately, do you have any idea why I hated AITSF almost as passionately? I’ve been struggling to figure this one out for over a year now.

The mockery is unending

Couldn’t quite say, no. They’re definitely very different vibes, and that’s usually about where things end for me as far as guessing why I don’t like something that, theoretically, I should. But if I did have to put more logic into it… I could guess that the shift in presentation, from a VN about strangers trapped in death games to a fully 3d point and click noir story that’s a bit more open about its scifi setting, could have something to do with it. I think that, while its not as shaky as Zero Time Dilemma’s steps toward cinema were, that continued shift into a focus on action and camera work could also be a sticking point, part of why 999 and VLR (and Ever17, so far) worked so well for me is that they do a lot with a little, while ZTD and especially AI try to do more with… more.

Date and Ryuki are also much hornier than Junpei, Sigma, or anyone from ZTD (Sigma gets close, but his moments aren’t as common, and don’t come paired with any huge comic relief bits like Date’s usually do). I think Zero Escape is a bit twistier, as well, which honestly might just be an extension of the whole “VN vs full 3d” thing. Zero Escape is definitely less hinged though; Nirvania Initiative might go to some pretty wild places, but it does so briefly, and only in its finale, while Zero Escape is throwing out curveballs constantly.

There is, of course, also the more outward facing issue of AI’s puzzles running on dream logic, while Zero Escape’s are more grounded, but also a bit more esoteric. I wish I could remember the details better, but Patricia Taxxon shared on tumblr her theory that “puzzle games” can be more accurately broken down into two categories; “puzzle” games and “riddle” games, but I don’t really recall the distinction she made between them with any detail (mostly that she puts Outer Wilds in the latter category, and really didn’t like it for that reason), and based on what little I do remember, I think its reasonable to put Zero Escape and AI on opposite sides of that divide.

In short: No, I cannot tell you, but I can provide guesses, based on both the differences between them and my own beliefs for why AI isn’t quite as good as ZE

Nine Sols update, 10 Sols

Holy shit, folks. This is the best last boss I’ve fought against in ages, probably ever. Top tier design, perfect balance. Instead of completely shifting the attacks and patterns in every stage, there’s an increasing amount of combos to be wary off, but everything that was done previously is still in the array, so you never “lose” practice. The type of final exam boss where you gotta roll up your sleeves and put everything you know into practice.

Turns out I don’t dislike hard games or Souls-like, I just dislike FROM. Not only did this deliver in every way possible in regards to gameplay and difficulty (there’s an Easy Mode, to begin with) but the characters, world setting and plot all knock it out of the park. I will forgive all mentions of “Taopunk” if it means Red Candle Games and Taiwan can keep kicking these out.

Thankfully its in a lot of spots of the Indie Game Awards, because the total omission of this from the TGA only makes the event and the inclusion of Shadow of the Erdtree more of a joke. I can absolutely see now how its the GOTY of so many people, even if I still have other releases from this year that I want to play.

Its absolutely BUCKWILD to me that this is Red Candle’s first game of its genre because HOLY SHIT Nine Sols is so, so good
You’re right that it’s an absolute crime TGA didnt touch it, it’s easily one of the best games of the year for me
It was really fun to see someone else experience it for the first time, thank you for sharing!!!

Alternate form (no graphic cuz im at work):

same mild spoiler

Eigong: *long-winded diatribe on the necessity of her actions in securing the future of their people and their eternal place in history while attacking you and demanding your surrender*
Yi: haha get parried idiot

I know there’s multiple endings, but I don’t know if I got a “True” one, or what it’d entail

Yi used the rhizomatic arrow to fire at the core after Eigong merged with it, Shuanshuan, Ahnong and Kuafu went back to Earth, which seems to have finished its artificial ice age

Yessssss goooood

my only annoyance wrt the two endings is that the ‘normal’ one doesnt include her sickass final form, which is hands down my favorite form of hers. The pattern for her big attack during it finally clicked a couple days ago on a refight and god it feels so good. Otherwise both endings are really cool, and say a ton about yi’s state of mind and character because of the stuff you did (or didnt do) to earn it

yep yep if you got a fourth form then you got the true ending. you’d also know because you’d be deeply unsatisfied by the not true ending LMFAO
