What Have You Been Watchin?

I’ve been watching the Mobile Suit Gundam compliation movies on Netflix. I think I’m half way through the second one. I just checked today to see that it cuts out filler and stuff but I guess I’ve only listened to the Great Gundam Project so I don’t really mind.

I think it’s really funny how the strength I see in this show is the drama instead of the battle. The best mech fights are ones where the matchups aren’t relevant and it’s the dramatic sci-fi circumstances (such as zero-g and atmospheric re-entry) that are both the most interesting and dramatic. But even then, the fights aren’t just there as a matter of cause; it doesn’t feel like the show is mech fights with connective tissue in the middle. While the fights are happening because of these two faction at war, I really enjoy how the conflict builds up between the pilots before they even get called to jump into a cockpit.

I adore original Gundam, the cast is great, the drama is great, the robots are great and its 42 episodes feel really breezy. I have no idea how much the movies cut and streamline but I’m not gonna tell you you’re watching it wrong, hope they give you a good time!

Over on my end I started watching Dragon Ball Z Kai (English dub) this week to force myself to lie down when I was having some hand aches. I’m going with Kai because Z’s 300 episode count is really daunting, but I saw a “reverse skip list” that recommends some fun filler from Z that was cut to watch after certain Kai episodes, which brings up the episode count to just over 200 episodes still. Committing to watching such long series always feels so menacing to me so I have no idea how long it’s gonna take me to get through or if I will, but I’m having a good time! Just up to Goku and Vegeta’s fight starting in the Saiyan Saga. The filler with Goku falling down into hell and then later getting sidetracked by a snake queen baddie on the snake way was so much fun, Dragon Ball!!!

MS Gundam let’s fuckin go  as makku says, it was a much breezier watch than I was expecting tbh.

I’ve been watching The Office (US) for the first time. haven’t got much to say about it. a larger percentage of the cast are just totally irredeemable human beings than I was expecting LMAO

I watched 3 seasons of The Office in one of my deepest depressive periods of 2021 and remember almost nothing of it. Its such an absolutely void of a TV show.

That was also the period where I watched a little bit of Travellers, that was an odd series.

Also mostly caught up with DunMeshi, I’ll watch this week’s episode later. I’m not as gripped by this series as most folks, the cooking segments actually really take me off and work much better in a reading format, but its still a nice show to chill off to.

  • Chilchuck is already my fav for several reasons and being a terrible husband (or divorced?) and dad somehow make him even better for me

  • There’s some very neat details about Marcille’s expertise with magic, though I’m not sure how they’re going to come up in the show. I do like how book-y or stuck to rules and organization she is. The one thing that really gets her about all this adventuring is the improvisation, she wants people to be certified, adhere to proper rules, etc.

  • The village episode is…odd. I get what they’re trying to go with, but aside from more Magician deets, it ended up being a little unfulfilling. Though I do appreciate the idea that they’re not the first to come by, or that Yadda isn’t even sure they’re really chosen, that does make the prophetic aspect more palatable

  • That’s the point! Also we can have little a Listle as a treat

yeah that’s a pretty good way of putting it. I’d say once every few episodes it gets a laugh out of me but idk.

I didn’t catch that at all!!! I usually watch right before bed so it seems I’ve been missing some big things !!

Listle definitely seems like a good pairing. It was really weird how he remembered Laios from the painting!! What the hell??

are you saying that unlike other mecha shows, this one is about the characters

I fully believe that there is no Mech show about the Mechs anymore. It just doesn’t exist.

I started watching Dungeon Meshi, with the English dub. It’s pretty interesting so far.

I like how casual they are about death; they’ll just be recounting some random anecdote and go “anyway that’s how I died my first time”. It makes sense, this is basically an anime dungeon crawler setting, resurrection is a pretty normal thing.

One of the most alluring aspects of Dungeon Meshi is how it casually brushes over some of its darker tidbits.

i feel like i only post about dungeon meshi but i just finished it and holy shit the episode with the hippogriff was SO SAD.:pleading_face::pleading_face: senshi :pleading_face::pleading_face: it completely broke my heart… i totally thought he ate dwarf meat… it was so weird that they had that as the first half of the episode and then the second half was just some hijinks… but i guess the whole backstory was kind of a setup for a laios joke lmao.

the finale was kinda weird! i felt nothing really happened or got set up. they didn’t even have a big cook or anything… the animation was great though!! falin eating alone and then giving marcille some random nuts :confounded::sob: why is this show so emotionally charged?? also their dumbass idea to eat falin makes no sense. why do they become convinced of things they are aware they just made up, like the egg metaphor?? anyway, great show!! i might even read the manga (rare drop)

I marathoned all the Star Wars prequels today because I hadn’t seen I or II at all and hadn’t seen III since 2005. On the whole, I think they’re really interesting movies and I do appreciate what they’re trying to do, but I don’t think any of them really hold together either on their own or as a coherent story arc. Definitely respect them more than any of the sequels, though.

When I tried to watch them, I feel asleep on every single one :sob: I feel like being Cinema Sensations™ was a big part of their appeal

One helpful tip about the prequels that can raise your enjoyment is if they come out in your high school years and the concept of dual wielding lightsabers completely changes your brain chemistry

This rule also applies to keyblades btw
