Some men just want to watch the world burn, Steven
Finished D20 Neverafter. REALLY really wanna run a short campaign or oneshot now, especially since I backed FATE of Cthulhu’s kickstarter so I have all the modules for that, and some irl friends have expressed interest in a few of them
watched The Wild Robot and it obliterated me
cws for homo/transphobia/cissexism (primarily in the section where she lays context for how queer ppl were treated in the 90s)
real neat viddy essay i’ve been meaning for watch for uhhhh years lol (silas is finally working through its watchlater queue on youtube)
Steven Universe Update: Rose’s Room hit a lot more nightmare-ish to me, especially because that’s literally a recurring nightmare I used to have.
With the midseason finale done (its weird that midseason or midseason finales are a thing) now at least I know why they keep calling Lapis Bob
also, watched One Piece Fan Letter yesterday. Its a pretty fun “filler” episode, or a fan episode? There’s some basic knowledge of OP that would be good to have, but overall its a fairly straightforward “This is what normal people do when the superpowered pirates and marines are duking at each other”, and I always love stories about mundane people in fantastical worlds. Good animation, hits on some solid emotional beats.
I finished this season of Love and Hip Hop ATL. I thought the last few seasons were blah, but Mona Scott really brought it this season.(or her producers did at least). Lots of different storylines mixing in (Kirk trying to cheat again, the love-hate quadrangle between Scrappy, Bambi, Amy, and Khaotic. Yandy and Mendeecees having marital troubles and possibly being exposed by the same woman Kirk tried to cheat with.)
The short of it is reality TV is back. Love and hip hop is going to UK next year and LHH Miami is looking nice too.
Yesterday someone shared with me a compilation of Superman’s Anti-smoking Ads, which was supposed to be somewhat in a joking way, but I’m flabbergasted at how good the animation is, the frames, the fluidity, like holy shit
We took a break from Steven Universe and watched The First Slam Dunk tonight.
Damn good movie. There’s an interesting style of animation with 3D and 2D playing, which for a while is reminiscent of some modern videogames, but you quickly understand why; not only is the dynamism of the game absurd, they also do a lot intense “camera” work, quick shots, stylized cuts, which would be crazy to pull on a purely 2D medium.
And the narrative is intense; takes a little bit to get warmed up, but they manage to basically introduce every main character to a certain extent, giving you just enough to feel what makes each player tick, the stakes of the game, what brought them to the sport and to this match, all while still keeping the pace of the scores.
Somehow, sports anime/manga just manage go much harder on the emotional beats and the tension than battle manga, never fails.
Also 80s styled manga is super my thing. The ridiculous hairdos, the teenage or young adult characters looking like they’re 30, people actually having lips.
favorite thing about the movie is that it changes who the main character is to actually make it watchable for people who are new to the series - if you never read it you wouldn’t realize that the red head is the actual MC, but the stakes for his story (I started playing basketball because a girl liked it) would not resonate with an average audience viewer. The fact that they manage to make the final match of the series accessible to anyone is extremely cool to me. One of my favorite movies ever now.
I knew the MC was the red head but I had no idea this was literally the final match of the series, amazing
can’t wait to turn the discord chat into space dust with this movie in 5 days
laughed so hard at new Monster Factory I literally almost threw up
The game had levels of spite not seen since Spore
MHA: they should have had Mirko kick more ass in previous seasons before putting her on the shelf
Continuing my Dimension 20 catch up with A Crown of Candy. Only a few episodes in (And I think I’m gonna be skipping the Adventuring Parties this time, considering they’re so much longer than the in-person ones, and also seem to be general Q&A sessions as much as a venue for discussion of the previous episode), but absolutely loving it
Hunter × Hunter is not the sort of show I would normally enjoy but listening to Media Club Plus about it has been really interesting and is making me more appreciative of it and also shonen as a genre
I should get around to listening to MC+ bc I’m quite firmly in the ‘HxH is fine but wildly overrated’ camp and it’d be interesting to hear another perspective
A lego youtuber I like was gifted a fan game for halloween that based on fnaf uaing a bunch of his running jokes and favorite sets, with all 6 nights playable. Its absolutely hilarious (if also still entirely jumpscare based and thus nearly unwatchable for me, although I did still get to the end, with some liberal pausing)
