What's a 'guilty pleasure' of yours?

What’s something other people might think of as strange, overrated, “”“cringe”“”, etc that you earnestly enjoy?

React Channels. It got to the point where I’ll watch a movie or series just to catch the react later, or frequently rewatch certain moments (Undertale Pacifist ending being one when I feel like crying a bit)

Reality TV, especially gordan ramsey shit. Last season of love is blind was immaculate in its trashiness.

Sometimes I’ll download some gacha game and use the free currency to pull shit for serotonin before deleting the game shortly after. I am immune to gambling so I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS IF YOU DONT TRUST YOURSELF

When I’m alone in the apartment because my mom has gone to see my sister I will take one day where my dinner is hot wings, a bag of chips, and those pre-unwrapped recees you can get in a bag. Chat is this guy dinner

Oh on that note, recees puffs at 2AM

Also bad horror movies

what is it about react channels that you enjoy? no judgment, just curious!

seconded yeah. I too have become Immune to Gambling (after a brief gacha Incident in my 20s :S) honestly, trashy mobile games in general are a weakness of mine? at this point I feel like I’ve played basically every game on the play store LOL

does Kakegurui count? I have often referred to it as ‘my favourite anime I cannot recommend to anyone’. be warned if you look it up that it is a lot.

Butcher channels, mead makers and cheese makers, if they show the aging process the better. I love fermentation and aging!!!

There’s the basic mood of “showing something that you like to another person”. That anticipation of how they’re going to take the twists, the emotional moments, action scenes, etc. Its much shallower in this case since they’re online strangers, but its also easier and plentifully available

The 1.5th reason is that I’m an emotional vampire (/j) and love to see people displaying intense feelings, like with Undertale where I mentioned above. Options like Frieren or Madoka are also really good for this catharsis. Cinema Therapy anime and Pixar videos are also very good about this, although theirs is more of a qualified opinion rather than just watching.

In that vein, there’s one particular type of emotion/reaction that I enjoy, which is experts amused at how well media portrays something that they work at. This one about money laundering praising how well Breaking Bad explains it is a good example, and IIRC a few experts even admit to using clips from shows during their classes to point out accuracies or inaccuracies. I also have a soft spot for when they’re more human and admit that something might be innacurate, but still fun to watch; The lawyer analysing courtroom scenes and explaining that almost nothing about A Few Good Men makes sense “but I can’t argue with this, its one of the greatest courtroom scenes of all time” is oddly heartwarming.

The secret third reason was self indulgence; The guy that got me into this was one dude who reacted to a few brazilian movies, before shifting his channel into pure brazilian music and movies reacts. Usually I’d sneer at an apparently blatant attempt at baiting (there’s a lot of these types, usually americans reacting to south american or russian food/music looking for easy clicks) but he was genuinely heartfelt, and ‘got’ a lot of the social nuances. (It helps that he was black, so there was some basic kinship there). Unfortunately his was one of the channels recently caught in this weird wave of crypto hijacking and I’m not sure if he’ll regain control =/

  • snacking on frozen bread;
  • I play Granblue Fantasy for real for real;
  • sometimes play porn games as just regular games (and stream them lmao). Castle in the Clouds is good, Zetria is bad, Flip Witch is v funny (but also a bit cowardly).

Oooh, there was one dude who had amazing Ippo reviews, like, hour long videos on specific fights, but unfortunately a lot of his videos got taken down by Youtube, even if he rehosted a few on Vimeo =/

this is actually pretty interesting, I’ve been shown clips from Encanto multiple times during my current uni course (to demonstrate all sorts of different things but particularly family dynamics)

Encanto is not my particular region but one thing I appreciate is that there’s a very easy reference to fish out now whenever I want to explain that yea, its pretty usual for an entire south american family to build, and keep building, a larger house in the same terrain as more people move in/are born, instead of kicking out their children when they turn 18.

Another thing is that Antonio is the one character that I recall having the same type of hair that I did during the pandemic, which is neat. I try to not be seen by Disney products but I’ll give them a freebie on this one.

(also the whole thing with Bruno hit me badly, especially for daring to have my name on top of all things, but that’s a whole different matter)

It’s nothing unusual really, but I have a bad habit of indulging in house building TV like Grand Designs. It stems from an ongoing housing anxiety caused by my landlord that started 2 years ago and is going to continue to haunt me until I manage to find a new place to move into in 5-10 years. So I watch boomer TV like Grand Design and Build Your Dream etc about unimaginably rich people building their own houses and I sit here thinking “Oh~ If only I had a morbillion dollars this could be me~” It’s mostly a guilty pleasure only because I’m not actually sure if it’s a good idea to feed my brain these things and make it think about the issues even harder HKJDSHFJKSDHF

For a while early in the pandemic it was 90 Day Fiancee, specifically the season with the white dude who went down to Brazil, which was really infamous LOL I was addicted!!

Now I feel like… the one I’m a little more embarrassed to share are like theme park history or just in general theme park channels (Not Defunctland but more like TDR Explorer or Theme Park History) only because I don’t want people to think I’m a Disney Adult or something LOL I just think the engineering that goes into high end theme park rides is really cool, also wanting to see what kind of food offerings are at overseas parks

nah this is valid, i also love that shit. theme park rides are wild to see be built!

Outside of maybe porn stuff i have two things id consider guilty pleasures

  • Liscensed anime Arena fighters alot of ppl talk down on them as though theyre completely devoid of any tech and they’re cowards.
    Alot of these games have some good stuff in them if you take the time to lab them a bit, and they can be pretty fun. They usually have this thing called target line cutting or something that make them unviable for competitive play since you can dodge forever using it, but most haters dont know about that

  • Reality TV: im generally talking about the "Bad Bitches being messy genre of Reality TV like Love & Hip Hop, Real Housewives, etc. This one feels a little bad cuz i used to be very anti Reality TV. I even knew research on how shows like that harm perceptions of Black women and how Black Teens suffer lower self esteem due to shows like this. But things changed. I’ve become more cynical on the situation since Sorority Sisters premiered and 2020 gave me the time to sit down and become a fan.

Easily my guiltiest pleasure is arguing with Gamers about what they don’t (but think they do) understand about game development. I’ve never leaked anything, but I sometimes support my arguments with anonymized insider info.

It is a very bad habit, but there is a joy in seeing people be so confidently wrong.
