We started today dreading the amount of cooking and baking we’d have to do but we ended up really having a good time. We just really love to cook! It’s the same as our love for chemistry, but much harder to screw up
It’s really fun and good! It does sometimes feel like magic even as the steps are also So Material and visceral (literally when it comes to handling meat). I thought I was gonna lose my mind cooking thanksgiving dinner a few months back, but it was actually super fun and rewarding, even though it was a tremendous amount of work.
A week before Lunar New Year is the kitchen god ceremony, and every year I tell myself “this time I’m gonna get everything for it done on time so I don’t have to rush to finish before midnight” and every year ADHD or Life or both conspire to make me rush to finish before midnight anyway
This year they cut off the water to the building for emergency repairs and it completely threw me off
It feels like it’s so early this year, happening in January. I don’t celebrate it much aside from a family dinner and (trying to) make egg dumplings, so without my parents not much happens. But an internet friend who does Mongolian calligraphy has been working on some art so I might get one of those to hang on my front door for a bit.
The way my stomach GROWLED when I saw this Looks like a heck of a spread!!!
WAIT sorry to double reply but I think I also have those red rice bowls. Those were the ones with the cartoon zodiac animal on them, right? I have one for ox because I’m biased and wanted a cow bowl.
YES IT’S TWO OX AND A SNEP
Kinda lookin’ for a recipe book or something for when i’m tired/don’t have a ton of time, any recs?
: Sad Bastard’s Cookbook is good for when you’re low on cash/energy/time. Its a lot of simple/cheap stuff and small variations on it intended to be Filling and Simple if not fancy or fantastic
not winning any awards for prettiest but we made okayodon today (following the recipe from Just One Cookbook) and it ruled.
Doesn’t have to look pretty if it looks tasty! Hell yeah
I haven’t read the book @TheGhostQueens mentioned (YET, though I’m gonna bc it sounds like a great resource) but I did just see someone say it is currently available as a free download!
The Sad Bastard’s Cookbook
it’s definitely what it purports to be! Very good for cheap and depressed!
The egg streak continues (I called in trans to work today and @TheGhostQueens made me breakfast about it). They fuck severely
: i stole his phone :D we learned how to scramble eggs during our time in a hole-in-the-wall NJ bagel store which meant “scramble seperately and then fry hard and fast” which ykno
Very dry and limp eggs. Good for a sandwich, less for alone
So today i tried low temperature scramble and wow turns out chefs know what they’re doing wow wild woah
coffee cake :P
i think we might have fucked up the recipe so it’s not terribly good. baked it for the 30 mins in the recipe and had to do 20 more but it still feels kind of dense and underbaked in the middle. i think we put too much egg since it required 85g and we did 100g since an egg is like 50g and didn’t wanna waste egg. didn’t really feel like scaling the rest of the recipe to account for it though so that’s probably what’s wrong, in addition to possibly overmixing
