Cooking thread! Post nice food you’ve made, share recipes and advice. Great food you’ve ordered or made by someone else is also allowed! And baking is welcome too, of course.
I’m not an amazing chef by any means. I was raised on fish and potatoes, and I live alone and struggle to dedicate the time for cooking with work. But recently I’ve been trying to actively spend more effort on making more varied and delicious meals. Food is great and making something tasty is great and satisfying!
Today’s lunch was hacky gyudon. I don’t often stock sake and mirin because I’m pretty tight with my groceries budget, but sometimes you have cravings, and soy sauce, sugar and eggs give a satisfactory result even if it’s not the most authentic. It’s hard to go wrong with rice and beef!
lil messy but I made musakhan for a get-together with the gaming group the other day. One of the members is diabetic and I didn’t want her to feel excluded so instead of individual flatbreads I cut a giant flatbread into the shape of the baking tray so she could just opt not to take bread without it being too obvious
[roasted sumac and 7-spice chicken over caramelized onions over flatbread with a lemon in the corner and toasted pine nuts sprinkled liberally over the top]
for reference when I say “giant flatbread”, here is what was left of the flatbread AFTER I cut the nearly 9"x13" (~22.85cm x 33cm) piece out of it, this delicious behemoth fed us for a week after that
Oh that looks sooo tantalizing!! I’ve never made tiramisu myself before but now I want to try it sometime, I have an uncontrollable sweet tooth.
There was a big discount on sausages at the grocery store this week, so to get some use out of them I made korvstroganoff for today’s dinner and the coming couple of days’ lunch boxes. It’s a Swedish beef stroganoff variation using falukorv, a really mild pre-boiled sausage. The base recipe is sausage, onion, tomato sauce and cream, as well as mustard and/or chili. It’s a really simple recipe that lends itself well to additions and modifications, I add some soy sauce when frying the sausage and onion and use a chili tomato sauce for a nice kick. Today I also threw in some mushrooms because I bought a ton the other day and mushrooms are tasty. :)
I made So Much falafel, I regret nothing. I still have a ton of the uncooked stuff left, so I will only continue to eat more (maybe pics later afer I send them to myself)
That falafel looks soooo goood! I made a spontaneous apple crumble pie today. I always associate summer with apple pies, and I’d been craving it for weeks recently. I had a couple friends coming over today so I took the opportunity to bake a treat for the occasion. I usually use local apples but the store I checked didn’t have any so I went for a mix of granny smith and royal gala because I was indecisive. Left it a bit long and got a bit burnt at the tips but still tasty!
this is our standard “willing and able to actually cook something” meal. we use microwaveable rice (instant rice is a fucking lifesaver), chicken meatballs (easy pre-cooked protein option), red onion, chili onion oil (makes everything taste good), and arugula. tasty, nutritious, and relatively simple and quick.
no image but i made biscuits, bacon, and eggs with blueberry jelly for our breakfast and it was very good =w=. even if they were store bought fuck i was very happy to have biscuits, biscuits are so good. even if it was all very simple it is nice to actually cook something for breakfast instead of just leftovers/something instant or prepackaged.
we bought a box of this rice/orzo pilaf mix and wanna make something with that later this week, gonna try and save some bacon grease for it.
chicken katsu! I bake it rather than fry it. when I had a working vacuum sealer, I’d buy large quantities of chicken to turn into katsu and then seal and freeze them so I’d have easy katsu on hand.
