Lol they still do that too! There’s responsive and unresponsive yoyos. Responsive is what most people are used to, unresponsive don’t come back unless you do a “bind” which forces string into the gap against the spin direction of the yoyo. Most of the modern canon of tricks come from or build on concepts done on old school responsive yoyos in the 90’s. It was more a matter of exposure, most 90’s kids never saw the more advanced stuff. Unresponsive came about by accident in the early 00’s.
What’s funny to me is that there was so much hidden potential in the actual original yoyos (wooden ones with a fixed wooden axle) that wasn’t unlocked till ~2003. In the 30’s - 70’s all they did was throw down, foward, around the world and loop. There was so much more those old beasts could do but they just never thought of it. This is on a wood yoyo and would break their brains:
(okay I’m done putting tricks here, dont want to derail how’s people’s day)
i didnt know there was like History of Yo-yos and i am INTRIGUED and im not sure if its something youd like to expound on but i would be locked in on a thread about it (also cannnnnn i just say that seeing you masked is restoring some of my faith in humanity today my goodness)
pitched this last oct/wrote this in may/been having delays in getting it up which is fine but what ive learned is to get payment AS SOON AS IVE DONE THE WORK, not at publication. its kind of worked out because unemployment is holding my payments for this year (apparently what i got a few weeks ago was from a couple of months from last year) so at least the payment is good.
edit: THANK GOD I FOUND THE SUMMARY BUTTON
Summary
im glad i dont have to think about it anymore but i kinda think i regret it cause i need employment and i dont want this to make me seem less employable (but thats a reason to fight back against the feeling of needing to remain silent right? screams)
its wild to have this published on the day i have to go to a mandatory training for unemployment like–
Even though I started out moping about the election, in the evening I had choir rehearsal for our TDOR concert (it’s an all trans and non-binary choir) and it really helped my mood.
I need to bone up on some of the songs more but I’m really hoping it goes well and we provide a bit of emotional uplift for people.
Was a cute moment from this morning - I was prepping lunch for work, toasting the bread for my sandwich, when Quinn looked over and said, “That smells good!”
When she realized it was just regular toast, she very quickly concluded she needed some Carbs. Reminds me of the time on a boat trip where one of the grad students looked over the side and went, “The ocean looks like gatorade right now. [beat] I think I need a drink.”
trying to distract myself by doing lots of cleaning. actually going to reach out to my roommate and ask them to clean the tub (i’ll do the rest of the shower) bc cleaning tub hurty my hands/wrists instead of just pass-agg-ly doing it myself. already cleaned out the fridge + cleaned stove
Last week, my client schedule for my volunteer work for today was full (4 hours of meetings). Today, I am wondering if I will have any meetings at all since all my clients today (and most of my clients in general) are Black and/or immigrant women and I wouldn’t blame them at all for skipping a nonessential meeting rn.
(I would e-mail and offer them a chance to reschedule proactively, but I don’t want to make it seem like I’m pushing them to cancel or whatever. Some people want to distract themselves by keeping busy right now, I get that.)
Today started pretty good. I got a new 1CC and made it to work pretty early and was somewhat productive. Even saw a good friend on the street, but i just lost alot of spirit when i got home for some reason. Feeling a little better now, but quite a rollercoaster today.
Slept in today, and while the monkeypox vaccine was indeed very itchy as they said, I have gotten some game dev work done on my game jam prep project in hopes that I can start doing actual AI programming in UE. Might still do some work after a break, though.
Got into a bit of a bind with my parents at home discussing current struggles. Kind of turned into a debate, and even after ending it all off on better terms, I feel my connection there’s still getting strained, and I further cannot wait until my mom’s living situation improves so I can spend more time with her whilst I figure out my place in the outside world.
Biiiig shopping day. When your wallet is full of overtime pay you’re allowed to treat yourself! Went out into the city and walked around to a bunch of stores to break in and feel out some new boots I bought last month. Started off buying some cat food, then went to a tea store and treated myself to a bunch of teas that seemed nice to try and also 500g black raspberry because ive realized im basic lol. Then to the fabric store, picked up a cat fabric for a shirt for my nephew and some Spiderman fabric for a niece dress because last time I saw her she told me she likes Spiderman. The pattern is a bit plain but I think with some dark blue accents and dress folds it’ll look good.
I swung by an H&M I passed because I really need to get some new leggings but this H&M was sterile as fuck and didn’t even have any types of socks at all because clothes stores that aren’t Uniqlo are engineered to give you negative emotions so I just said fuck it and couldn’t be assed trying any other store and my bag was getting really heavy anyway. Took the subway over to a different part of the city to pick up 10kg koshihikari rice and then turned back home and got some poke takeaway on the way because a person who sat down across from me on the subway had a REALLY nice looking salmon bowl and it made me hungry…
My partner was kind enough to bring home a connector for me to put Rockbox on my iPod, so I put that through its paces a bit today. The battery in the iPod seems alright, just the indicator is busted–but it also seems a bit busted on stock firmware; I think all told it gets maybe 3 hours of playtime before needing to charge. It’s an original battery so can’t complain too much!
Outside of that, I did a bit more gold grinding in Dragon Quest and did some more backseat-Triple-Triad-ing. A peaceful Saturday.
Got roommate’s first step to name change in the mail. Unfortunately while the state doesn’t require a police background check, the county we live in does. But that’ll be in the works now, hopefully before or just after Thanksgiving.
Now my plans involve getting angry at my computer while I try to install a replacement DVD burner (need to remove stripped screws) and put in a PCIE riser (because modern GPU are TOO DAMN BIG)
