Iā€™ve played a few super metroid hacks, I donā€™t remember what most of them were cause they kinda blue together but I remember one of them was the one where they rotated everything 90 degrees. I got really good at wall jumpingā€¦

iā€™ve been playing Pokemon Unbound and itā€™s probably one of the best Pokemon games Iā€™ve ever played lol. I actually stopped to try some of the other romhacks instead because Iā€™ve heard people say that one is so far and above everything else it makes the rest feel worse by comparison

So apart from stuff Iā€™ve actually released I sometimes do technical research on games in general. Past year or so Iā€™ve made a fair amount of symbol maps to varying degrees of completion for various GB/GBC games, in the hopes of either colorizing or translating.

Also now that Mesenā€™s been out there as a multi-system emulator with its God-tier debugger, Iā€™ve been meaning to really tackle something with the prowess it offers, mainly for GBA or WonderSwan since it got those this year and those platforms do tickle my fancy.

Iā€™m making a romhack named Solo Crystal. Itā€™s a hack of Pokemon Crystal based around the idea of making sure that all 251 Pokemon can beat the game without too much trouble(Some will require more grinding than others). In addition, I want to open up more possibilities for lower Pokemon that can already beat the game.

You see, when a lot of Pokemon gets to Red at the end of the game, they get forced into using the moves Curse and Rest. Too many of them, IMO. So I am going to expand their options.

The basic tweaking I am doing is raising stats, changing movesets via their level up moves and their TM/HM/Tutor lists, buffing some moves, making Vitamins much more accessible, and Iā€™m changing Dark type to be physical as it seems like itā€™d function better that way(Mostly at least. Houndour/Houndoom will be nerfed by this. I will buff Houndour to compensate. Maybe Houndoom but probably not).

Currently, I am testing changes I made to Bayleaf. Bayleaf is the most dangerous of the second form starters in the second Rival fight, and my initial testing showed I had overtweaked it and basically no Rock/Ground Pokemon could stand up to it. As such, Iā€™ve (re)buffed Rock/Ground types and made Bayleaf a little weaker(Though, it is still stronger than its vanilla counterpart).

This is awesome as hell

Yeah itā€™s really really good, especially coming from someone who isnā€™t much of a pokemon fan

I need to get back into it, but I was playing through and liveposting (livetooting???) screenshots of my Pokemon Foolā€™s Gold playthrough. Itā€™s very fun! Itā€™s ā€œwhat if Pokemon Crystal but every Pokemon was a region form,ā€ i.e. different type/appearance. Itā€™s very funny seeing the alternate forms that the modders came up with ahaha. I need to make this into its own blog post or something before it gets swept off of Mastodon foreverā€¦

thank you! i remember seeing you rec this a while back before cohost went down read-only and couldnā€™t remember. Now itā€™s ready to go on the miyoo :3c

Iā€™ve made a lot of progress on my Pokemon Crystal romhack. Done a lot of tweaking(iā€™ve probably altered over half of the pokemon in some way), and I lowered all the game corner prizesā€™ prices to make the moves much more accessible.

Yeah that was partially a motivator for this hack. Like, you should be able to use a fucking Growlithe throughout the game, you know? Plus, with like, vitamins being much more accessable, youā€™ll be able to power up your dudes pretty quickly.

Oh I should list what I did with the vitamins.

So like, when you use a vitamin, it raises a hidden stat referred to by the community as stat experience. Each of the main stats(HP, Attack, etc) has its own stat experience number. This shit can go up to 65,535 points. Vitamins raise this number by 2,560. All told, you can keep using vitamins up until you reach a soft cap of 25,600. From there, the rest of your stat exp comes from fighting pokemon.

All in all, getting 65,535 stat EXP in a stat nets you 68 points extra in that stat. So, if you were to max out the stat exp on either of the special stats(They share their stat EXP number), youā€™d have 68 more points in special attack and special defense by level 100. The bonus stat points are doled out via one of two means.

  1. When you use a vitamin, it updates your stats. If you didnā€™t get enough stat exp from that vitamin to get a bonus point, nothing happens. If you did, you get a bonus point.
  2. Level ups. If youā€™ve ever noticed that sometimes your pokemon gets an extra point in a stat when leveling up, this is part of the cause.

Well, I did the following two changes.

A. I made all vitamins 1 dollar.

B. I raise the stat exp softcap to be roughly 32,768. So, about half of the hard cap of stat experience. Combined with all the fighting you do, itā€™ll be hard as hell to not max it out.

For the cost of less than a potion, you guarantee your pokemon will have good stat growth throughout the entire game, provided you are not avoiding trainers too much.

Sorry for the wall oā€™ text, this shit gets into the weeds sometimes.

Have I mentioned yet that I am autistic and a shut-in so I have developed several special interests and Generation 2 pokemon mechanics and balance is one of those?
