Yapping About Video Games Thread

Sometimes you want to talk about things outside of the Playing thread or just otherwise shit talk or praise some game you’re not actually interested in buying or trying yourself. This is the thread for that.

On somewhat current news, its crazy that once again Capcom has gone “Wait, y’all actually like playing our games? No shit? All right, guess we gotta make some more now” and are working on both Okami and Onimusha sequels

Both announced in the same year they released that strategy game that’s basically a PS2 style mid-budget action-strategy game.

Capcom is just firing on all cylinders.

Now, we just need Mega Man and Breath of Fire games…

I need Capcom to develop more than one fighting game at a time. Be bold and bring back Darkstalkers or Cyberbots. The way SF6 patches/content come so slowly makes me wonder what problems they’re having tho

I was gonna say “We got a new mega man game not that long ago” but Mega Man 11 came out like five or six years ago.

Hopefully if the Battle Network collections sells we’ll enough we’ll get some new ones.

I have a yap about La-Mulana

the problem with it is that it sucks immensely whilst being also incredibly fucking sick and it HURTS ME and the soundtrack is so damn good

this is sort of about games I’m playing but it’s more broad then one game I’m playing now

I’m still kinda split on whether Pokemon should have infinitely reusable TMs or not. I think it’s good that they’re reusable for the sake of building competitive teams and all that, but making them a limited resource for the main story is a good thing to me.

Maybe I should play more classic RPGs but they don’t have little guys.

Dragon Quest toys with the idea from time to time; DQ5 was actually one of the first (I think the first? But not 100% sure) games to do that kinda thing, but aside from that one its somewhat rare for the main series (8 does it I’m pretty sure, and 6 and 7 klnda do but in their own ways that probably wouldn’t scratch that itch; 6 has a few optional party members that are monsters, mostly different kinds of Slime, while 7 has unlockable classes for the main characters that change your sprite/model, depending on which version you’re playing, to be that monster, while also letting you learn different spells and abilities that those monsters use in battle.), and there’s also the Dragon Quest Monsters spinoffs, that lean more into it. Aside from that, there’s Shin Megami Tensei, for a take with a more grimdark tone and challenging gameplay (More “the world sucks and people die a lot” than “abusing normal animals for fun and profit”, you are summoning demons after all), and I want to say that I’ve heard Mutagen called a “crpg pokemon” once or twice? But with a mad scientist bent to it, you’re creating these magical constructs to fight alongside you. And I guess while I’m stretching the definition of “creature collector”, I might as well mention that Tactics Ogre has a monster handler class that can recruit monsters from opposing armies, plus some skills for other classes that let you recruit faeries, lizardfolk, golems, etc…

i think every person should be forced to play Dragon Warrior Monsters 2, which is the best monster taming game ever made, to this day. honestly theo nly thing that might beat it is Beastieball when it hits 1.0. maybe.

anyways five games left to write about for my GOTY 2024 post. normally this takes me forever but gestures at that ADHD post from earlier

Oh man, games of the year lists… I made one last year ranking every game I finished (less than ten), and had a bit more fun with it than expected even though I only posted it to one discord because other people were making their own lists. I’ve played a lot more games this year (I’m on track for 16 or 17)… gonna be a lot harder to put those in order, especially considering playing Xenosaga 3 right after Outer Wilds had a deep effect on my opinions of both… And honestly, I should just count Vampire Survivors as “a game I played and beat this year”, no real reason not to

You can solve a lot of gaming woes by not playing many games

This is a list I had in my Obsidian at some point before I realized a lot of them aren’t very good and I just don’t feel like making lists (though its still useful for me to go “oh yea, I played that” when I inevitably forget)

I think I actually did buy the game but haven’t started it lol

also in general I just play fighting games, which is something I need to fix. I guess it’s a combo of not hearing about a lot of releases I would be into (UFO 50 and Antonblast are recent exceptions) and y’know, fighting games not having an end.

do u guys usually do your GOTY lists just from this year’s releases or is any game you played this year eligible?

Honestly they’re not really woes, I’m playing more games than I used to partly because didn’t like how many games I was starting and then DNFing, and looked for ways to not do that. Turns out, the answer was to make lists and plan ahead. I actually keep a libre office doc of all the games I’ve finished since mid 2022-ish, and a much longer list of games I WANT to play, which is mostly weird niche stuff, cult classics, and random games that caught my eye when browsing my preferred roms hosting website

If I did something, it’d be any games I played, very rarely do I try something at release

The latter, I just don’t play new games nearly often enough to do the former. If I did that for this year, I’d be ranking Souls of Sovereignty Prelude, FF14 Dawntrail, and Clock Tower Rewind. Which is… a hard trio to rank, considering how different they are, and how one of them is a remaster of a game that would get an easy first place… except that its honestly not quite as good as the ps1 remaster that I played just before it, and has these godawful full screen notifications when you unlock certain things that can’t be disabled or closed manually… and can pop up during normal gameplay
